Birthdays

When I was in hospital having our son M - on October 17th 1981 - our next door neighbour at the time - Nita- was in hospital having her son, he arrived a few hours earlier than M so had a birthday on the 16th.
Our neighbour's eldest son was born in 1980 on April 16th, my birthday. Nita herself had her birthday on November 4th  and in 1987 our youngest daughter was born on............ yes you guessed - November 4th. Which is also Col's sisters birthday.
We have friends in Essex. He has his birthday on April 15th - the day before mine and  she has her birthday on November 1st, which is also the date of Col's brothers birthday.
Confused?
I once heard this question years ago on a Radio 4 Numbers programme - " how many people - made up of your family and friends -  do you have to have in a room to have two people with the same birthday? You would think it would be 366, but they said it's only 16.
It's certainly right with our friends and family, but is it just coincidence?
I really need to know!

And a PS -  Happy Birthday son, poor old fella is 34 today.

As promised - more wedding photos!

Thank you for all the lovely comments after the photo I quickly uploaded on Saturday.

Although our children seem to be endlessly attending weddings - (our son has 3 in 4 weeks!) Col and I can't remember the last one we went to.
So I shall now bore you rigid with photos from our Wedding Of The Year!
The venue was The White Horse Chilgrove, a quirky pub frequented by H,  J and their dozens of  friends from the Guildford area.

Helen had planned everything herself, she's very keen on natural and recycled so her flowers were from The Homegrown Flower Company . We detoured between Suffolk and the venue and picked up 4 buckets full of gorgeous proper garden flowers and then spent nearly 3 hours putting them in the dozens of  bottle, vases and jam jars that H had collected from here, there and everywhere. Many she had sprayed with glitter and some were wired to hold short flowers which we hooked over the the chairs in the marquee. They looked gorgeous.
All the hand tied bouquets were from the same place, but they were delivered on the wedding morning. Here we are on Thursday afternoon- Brides new sister in law, C the Grooms mum, me and H, all without our finery!

The top table early morning. As the staff were laying the tables  we were putting the party favours - ( 250 little heart shaped biscuits that I had made earlier last week) - into bags, tying them with ribbon and then adding  name labels that H had stenciled  for the place settings. Me, grooms mum, Col and our youngest's partner got quite a production line going!

Looking through the pub at some of the tables

The rain was TEEMING down as we dashed from pub to the wedding ceremony
which was in a marquee behind the pub. Me and C ( Grooms mum) had fun trying to light candles during the ceremony which H & J then used to light another candle as a symbol of two families joined together. We had hoped for sunshine for an outside wedding but the wind and rain made us glad of a marquee with sides

J waiting nervously for the bride with the Humanist Officiant. ( H and J did the official legal bit the day before at a registry office with just 2 friends as witnesses)

And here she is. The readings were the traditional Irish blessing that starts " May the road rise up to meet you".

An Apache wedding blessing     " Now you will feel no rain, for each of you will be the shelter for each other. Now you will feel no cold, for each of you will be the warmth for the other. Now you are two persons, but there is only one life before. Go now to your dwelling place to enter into the days of your life together. And may your days be good and long upon the earth."

Another reading was from the book Captain Corellis Mandolinby Louis de Bernieres
"Love is a temporary madness, it erupts like volcanoes and then subsides. And when it subsides you have to make a decision. You have to work out whether your root was so entwined together that it is inconceivable that you should ever part. Because this is what love is.
Love is not breathlessness, it is not excitement, it is not the promulgation of promises of eternal passion. That is just being in love, which any fool can do. Love itself is what is left over when being in love has burned away, and this is both an art and a fortunate accident.
Those that truly love have roots that grow towards each other underground, and when all the pretty blossoms have fallen from their branches, they find that they are one tree and not two."

Luckily an hour or so later after drinks and canapes the rain stopped for the photographer to take photos outside.
J couldn't decide between his best friend or brother for best man so had both.

The grooms family in this one. Grooms brother is  married to H's best friend ( from uni days) sister! Which I think is how H met J nearly 10 years ago.

Our son, the archaeologist, was Master Of Ceremonies - he is a big fella with a BIG voice!

Cols' sister taking a photo of me taking a photo of her taking a photo of me..............

Bride and Groom with beautiful bridesmaids

Walking through a shower of confetti

Our youngest and her partner, she has been making funny faces at the camera since she was about 3!

The cake, with the posh knife I found for H from a car boot sale - she was so pleased with it. Amazing what you can find at a boot sale!
Our 3 together

H and J having a fit of giggles for the First Dance

We bailed out at around 11 pm and headed 5 minutes up the road to our B & B. The pub has 15 rooms but H though we would prefer to be a bit further away as the partying went on 'til after 1pm!

We  had 2 very long  but wonderful days with family and  new friends.

Back to earth with a bump as our youngest moves into her new flat and we get the house ready to sell!

A Wedding Party

We have just spent a wonderful couple of days away in West Sussex at our eldest daughters wedding. She had worked really hard planning it all over the last 18 months and all went well except for a bit of a panic when all the electric went off just as the hairdresser arrived. Thank goodness it came back after 20 minutes or the results would have been different ( no hairdresser, no food, no light, no music PANIC).
Here is just one quick photo, that someone took on my old camera - there are dozens more!

Me , James our new son-in-law, Helen our gorgeous daughter and Col the extremely proud Dad whose speech made the whole room reach for their hankies!

A Catching up Post

First, welcome to MummyHughesy, Crown princess and Lindabwick22 who have clicked the Google button and f land, SusiWa and Treehedgewytch via Bloglovin

So where have I been for the last day or two?

On Sunday we had a day out visiting Cs sister and brother-in-law. Everyone who was at our house on Christmas Day except our eldest and her other half who had already headed home to Surrey, were there plus our nephew and niece and their partners. The Logo Game competition was in progress when I took these pictures.

It's a good job she has a large house. 16 people fitted into one room.
Everyone ate too much yet again and we brought home some of the food we had taken so another lot of leftovers in the fridge!

This morning we had to go to Ipswich as C had a hospital appointment - a 3 month follow-up from the October heart "event". We didn't bother to go into the town centre for shopping, still nothing needed. So it just a quick stop at Aldi for milk and veg, hospital and home. The doctor at the hospital has changed some tablets yet again so hopefully C will lose the breathlessness that's been a problem since October.

I now hope we can stay at home for several days without visitors, without driving anywhere and without overeating.

Hope you had a good day,we did.

Thank you for all the Christmas greetings on comments on 24th and I enjoyed reading everyone's Christmas posts over the last few days.

I think that Christmas day went well, it was all a bit of a blur - No, not too much alcohol, just very very busy. Cooking for 12 involves lots of juggling of dishes and pans, plates and jugs! All worth the effort as I've never seen so much food demolished so eagerly by all the family.
I think C caught us all mid-munch!

We didn't get to Aldeburgh for a walk along the prom as it was well past 3pm, and beginning to drizzle by the time we left the dining table.

We had some lovely pressies. I have 7 Penny Pincher Letter Friends and we swap small presents, often home made, each year and because they are a total surprise they are fun to unwrap. There were also   presents all the way from Tiree and from the US - also penfriends, and also a good surprise. Then of course lovely gifts from all the family, often from our wishlists so always something really wanted. (The books below for me!). Our eldest, who always finds me something lovely gave me a beautiful Christmas table cloth amongst other things and there were things from my wish list from the other children.
Our lovely neighbour who says " I don't do presents!" always gives us both some money - which is a pretty good present as it often is the only money that I get all year that I feel I can do whatever I like with ( I'm sure there are words in the wrong order in that sentence!).
Amongst other things, C had a sundial from me and a rain gauge from our eldest, so has some jobs to do sorting out the best place outside for those. He secretly got me this beautiful hand turned Sycamore bowl.

While the brilliant butter dish in the colours of my kitchen came from our friends.

Today me and C spent the morning washing dishes, saucepans, plates etc etc left from yesterday, putting things into the cupboard and getting the living room furniture back in its place. And thank goodness I hoovered up as  my sister, brother-in-law and nephew called in after walking on the coast!

This evening has turned much colder and snow may well have fallen in the west and north of the country. I doubt we will get much over here on the coast - we rarely do.

I hope your Christmas Day and Boxing day were everything you hoped for.

Did you see TV News with those nutters queueing at 3am for Boxing Day Sales? I'm glad I wasn't!

Family Fame and Vegetarian Christmas Fare

A week or two ago I wrote about our Archaeologist son being on local ITV news when he was showing some schoolchildren around an old WWII  airfield as part of his latest job. I tried to work out how to put the TV clip onto the blog but failed so if you want to see what the Eighth In The East Community Archeaology project is all about you can Find it here
Yesterday we found our eldest daughter was also making a tenuous claim to fame as she had put this picture on her Facebook page. This lady appears almost at the end of the full length  Lidl Christmas ad on TV  and our daughter was the print designer who designed the bird design on her blouse. I had a look and there it is on the  Phase Eight website.

I've finally made it in TV!! Well not me exactly, just a print I designed! Look out for the lady wearing the bird print blouse at the end of the Lidl Christmas advert!!!!

Meanwhile back on the Simple Suffolk Smallholding we are not getting carried away by our children's fame and  our feet are truly on the ground .............very wet ground......... everywhere!

C had to go to the dentist this morning, then he worked in the poly-tunnels getting all the stakes that had been holding up the tomatoes, out of the tunnels. Next job will be to barrow in as much compost as possible ready for forking in.
I spent the morning playing in the kitchen; Baking bread, making a mushroom quiche and concocting a recipe for individual  nut and vegetable roasts ready for our future daughter in law R and her sister who will be here on Christmas day. I've layered a breadcrumb/cashew nut/celery/onion  mix with a parsnip/carrot mash with some cranberries in between. The mix I used today was just enough for 2 and  I cooked them until they were firm and golden. I'm going to put them in the freezer, take them out in a couple of days time and reheat with some mozzarella on top. We will have them for dinner and if they are tasty enough I shall then make more and freeze ready for the 25th. I will probably do 3 then I can have one as well, which will leave more chicken or turkey for the rest of December. R says that sometimes Christmas vegetarian meals in pubs or restaurants are just a pasta or something equally un-Christmassy, which means she misses out on the roast potatoes, Brussel sprouts and all the other things which go to make a proper Festive meal. I will also get some veggie sausages so R and G won't have to miss out my special honey and mustard glazed chipolatas which the meat eaters in the family all love.

This afternoon I shelled out the climbing French beans which have been drying in the kitchen for a few weeks. This resulted in half a jar full which will be plenty for sowing next year.

That's another November day done and dusted, we are certainly  rushing towards  December now.

Family Lunch

We've had a trip out today for lunch at Him Outsides' Sister and Brother- in-Laws home. His Brother and Dad went as well and our Nephew and Niece were also there  so it was nice to catch up on what everyone is doing. And good to have a delicious meal together.
Back home for egg collecting etc and more talking to cats.
Polly( the teeny black one) will  come out of the box/bed if I go in and sit on the floor, and she now rubs around me and purrs- a small success. Mabel is still staying firmly hidden away.
Another mild  day here without rain but a strong wind which is good for drying up the ground. The chicken runs are starting to recover.

Thanks to everyone for comments yesterday

Well, I don't know what it was, but I'm glad it's gone!

It wasn't flu, had that in 1989, and once you've had proper flu you really know it. It wasn't a cold, haven't had one of those for 3 years. So just a virus, but the nastiest thing I've had for years. Made even worse as it was  the weekend when all the family were here for the after Christmas get together. There they were all having a good natter in the living room and I'm flat out on the sofa in the kitchen, half asleep, feeling sick, alternating between being hot and cold, aching from top to toe and hardly enough strength to even hold a book!

Oh well, it's more or less gone now, just need to get some energy back after not eating anything much or doing anything for 4 days.

So here are "our lot".

Our 3 in the front and their partners behind them. Next time we're all together it will probably be at H and J's wedding ( that's them on the left). They've been together for ages and are both into their 30's so they've decided to arrange the wedding for the end of this year, hopefully, although it seems to me that planning a wedding in 2014 is a darn sight more complicated than it was back in 1979. Luckily H is quite happy and very able to do the organising for herself.
I haven't worn a dressy dress for about 20 years so I think I shall need some help finding something. And as for a hat.... Ha Ha Ha!( H, Please don't make me wear a hat !)

I managed to stay upright long enough on Saturday for the secret Santa present swap ( a book about being a house maid in the 1930's for me and some liquorice and beer for Him Outside) and then for a photo with the children.

When H was  here yesterday she found out how to use picmonkey to edit out all the rest of the room on the top photo but of course when I tried to edit another photo today, picmonkey wouldn't let me in and just kept telling me the Adobe flash player had crashed and when I tried to reload that, it wouldn't let me do that either. I HATE COMPUTERS. No that's not true, what I hate is not really knowing what I'm doing so that things don't do what I'm expecting them to do. Luckily M was still here and said save the blog, turn it right off and start again. So I did and hey presto! picmonkey did it no problem. I'm  grateful to Sadie( another Suffolk blogger) at Life in the English Rain, for sharing the info about this free photo editing site. Photos will be a lot more interesting from now on.

So here we are, two "old folk" with our offspring, neither me or Him Outside had bothered to dress up for the photo so I said we'll have to hide these old T shirts!

A HUGE ginormous Thank you to everyone for the get well wishes on Friday. I'm rarely ill and don't usually tell people if I am, but thought I had better explain the absence after being such a regular daily blogger since April.

Back tomorrow, now off to read all the blogs I've missed since Friday .... I may be gone sometime!

Boxing Day already.

Christmas Day whizzed by, we ate, we opened presents and we went down to Aldeburgh - leaving all the washing up in the sinks - to have a walk along the chilly prom.
We wrapped Dad C up in his wheelchair and got some fresh air.
We ate a bit more and I tried to teach brother in law how to do Sudoku and how to read my blog and Him Outside tried to persuade him of the benefits of watching large tractors and machinery on You Tube. I don't think either of us made him want to rush out and get himself on-line!

The best news was hearing that our eldest daughter H had woke to find an engagement ring, as her bloke J had finally got around to proposing. They've been together years, so after the congratulations we said"about time too!"

A trip out, a chance meeting and a surprise visitor

We needed chicken feed so decided to do a charity shop trip around a different town while we were out.We are still looking for jeans for Him Outside and still without any luck. If we don't find some soon he will be forced to buy new. That will come as a shock!

While we were buying a new DVD player. Who should appear in the shop but Him Outsides brother. He was in the town for a opticians appointment and had spotted us going into Argos. It's always a nice surprise to see someone we don't get to see often. I thought we would have to save up for a new DVD player because I had no idea they were available for £17!! So we didn't need to save and now on a cold winter afternoon I'll be able to watch my favourite Good Life DVDs and the Green Valley one I mentioned the other day. Plus Him Outside is pleased as he will finally get to watch the Phil Tufnell On Tour DVD that he found at a boot sale during the summer.

This was my spend today, in the Heart Foundation charity shop I found this lovely Advent calender. I've always been very anti advent calenders with chocolates in - much to the disgust of the children when they were little, and when I saw this I decided that even though there have been no children here for 7 years, it reminded me of one that I had a long time ago ( before anyone even thought of putting chocs in advent calenders) and at £1.50 it didn't break my frugal bank. I shall open the windows and enjoy it all through December.

Just as we were about to start for home we had a phone call from our son who was in the area to go for an interview and thought he would surprise us on his way home. He is an archaeologist and currently lives and works in the Milton Keynes area. The job he is interested in involves working on a community project connected with WWII airfields in East Anglia. As this was the subject of his university dissertation it would suit him well and bring him closer to home where he still has lots of friends. His partner has a business degree and she  has worked in various marketing jobs so I'm sure she would soon find a job in the area. We will keep our fingers crossed for them.
